How Corcadorca's Relocation Came About
Corcadorca believe theatre is for everyone. We create theatre in non-theatre venues because we believe this to be the most exciting and engaging way of inviting the public to join us in our love of theatre and of Cork City. Relocation has been a long time in the making. From the successful launch of our first off site production, 'A Christmas Carol' in Cork City Gaol in 1994 Corcadorca has been systematically pushing the boundaries of traditional theatre in an attempt to bring theatre into the heart of public life.
Corcadorca has been exploring the strong tradition of off-site theatre (theatre which is not in a theatre venue) which exists across Europe. With the advent of Cork 2005 we saw the possibility of inviting international masters of the trade to Ireland, a country as yet relatively new to off-site theatre. This was an opportunity to bring something very special to Cork and to Ireland. Corcadorca approached Teatr Biuro Podrozy from Poland, Grid Iron of Scotland and Compagnie Jo Bithume from France. The alliance born out of this is Relocation. The marriage of these four respected European companies with important Irish sites has set in motion an amazing and utterly unique series of explosive events for Cork 2005.
What's Happening Now
Since 2003 all four companies have been working on Relocation. There have been numerous fact-finding visits to Cork, and each Relocation company has presented lectures, workshops and seminars in Cork, introducing Ireland to their international world of theatre. Each company has combed the City for a site to call home in 2005. If you live in Cork you may have noticed Pierre Dolivet of Compagnie Jo Bithume wielding his trusty measuring tape the length and breadth of the Grand Parade or Jarek of Teatr Biuro Podrozy leading a group of Irish actors on a curious dance through St Finbarrs.
The Relocation companies are now at varying stages of writing, composing, choreography, casting, and directing, involving Irish actors and writers in their production processes.
