Corcadorca Presents: The Merchant of Venice

Come discover a city within a city as Ireland's premier site-specific theatre company brings to life 'The Merchant of Venice'. Corcadorca have been transforming Cork since 1991with shows such as 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in Fitzgerald Park and Fota Gardens and 'The Trial of Jesus' on Patrick's Hill. Now they are preparing the most colourful and powerful Shakespeare show ever produced in the South.

This modern dress, promenade production will begin at a concealed riverside city location before crossing the city in a blast of music and mayhem for Shylock's extraordinary courtroom scene, filmed live and broadcast onto the newly refurbished façade of the city courthouse. Created with the support of the Cork Midsummer Festival, we invite you to join Corcadorca's troupe of musicians as they follow the action, drama and mayhem of 'The Merchant of Venice' as Shakespeare makes Cork his home this Summer.

In choosing to produce 'The Merchant of Venice' during Cork's designation as Capital of Culture it is Corcadorca's intention to examine the city as it is today, particularly within a European context. It seems appropriate to look at 'The Merchant of Venice' at a time when in Cork and Ireland we find ourselves suddenly exposed to different resident cultures and colours. How tolerant and welcoming are we?

Masterminded by Corcadorca and made possible by Cork 2005: European Capital of Culture is the first event of it's kind in Ireland. For Corcadorca the project has been a long time in the making. Unlike Ireland, Europe has a rich tradition of site-specific theatre. So, with the advent of Cork 2005 Corcadorca saw the possibility of bringing some of these masters of the trade to Ireland. We approached three of the best, were met with a resounding yes, and Relocation was born. So, come follow the monsters, shipwrecks and travelling musicians around our city. For one glorious summer, Corcadorca's Relocation is relocating the best of international theatre into the heart of Cork. We hope you enjoy it!

"Ranks as the single most impressive cultural contribution to the millennium year bar none."
The Irish Examiner.

"Spell binding. Universally superb."
The Sunday Tribune.
