Woyzeck

In June 2007 Corcadorca turned its attention to another great classic, Woyzeck by Georg Büchner. Woyzeck is a powerful story about a hapless sailor whose life spirals out of control. To tell the story a unique and fitting location was chosen – Ireland’s Naval Base on Haulbowline Island.

Starting at the water’s edge as darkness falls, Woyzeck was a promenade production taking in the various historic and impressive buildings on the base. An original score composed by Mel Mercier, sound design by Matt Padden, costuming by Joan Hickson and an unforgettable set and lighting design by Paul Keogan were all set against the magnificent backdrop of the Naval Base and Cobh harbour.

But to sum this one up is impossible. Was it the cohesive and natural performances, was it the music and sound, the innovative sets, the darkness, the sea, the buildings, the ferry which brought the audience to the show, or was it the temperamental weather which conspired to make this the most haunting Corcadorca production thus far? It’s impossible to pick one element. Suffice to say Woyzeck was a production that those involved in and those who saw will remember for a while to come.
